The Coleman Public Library concluded its Summer Reading Program and Youth Book Club “Libraries Rock!” on June 27th, 2018 @ 10:00 am in the Library Community room.  A special program presented by Dr. Jerry Schulz, kicked off the morning.  Dr. Schulz demonstrated and played a number of instruments. The kids sang a number of songs and followed up with a question and answer time.

Librarian Sue Dossey gave a short program to those 68 in attendance for the Awards Program.  The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library and the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP), a consortium of states working together to provide high-quality summer reading programs.  Next year the theme will be “A Universe of Stories!” (Space Theme).

Plans for the Summer Reading Program begins in February with the Friends of the Library Annual Book/Bake sale.  All proceeds go towards the reading program to help pay for the children’s book bags, arts and crafts activities, programs and the Grand Prizes.  Those returning their reading logs and completing their reading requirements receive a reading certificate and coupons from local businesses.  One free swim pass from the City of Coleman, one free ice cream cone from Santa Anna Dairy Queen (New Sponsor), one free personal pan pizza from Coleman Pizza Hut, one free drink from Coleman Best Fried Chicken and one free drink from Owl Drug Store.  The Friends of the Library would also like to thank the following businesses and organizations for additional donations to the reading program: Cooper Supply, Inc., Coleman Veterinary Clinic, Ron and Diane Owens, Countywide Insurance Agency, Inc., Coleman County State Bank, Grammer’s, Coleman Interbank, Coleman County Electric Cooperative, Inc., Rhyders X-Press, and Big O’s.

A total of 130 children signed up for the reading program and a total of 77 completed.

The library started rocking on Registration Day June 6th 2017 at 9:00 am.   Our favorite program guy Mr. Blue Shoes, Michael Dyson came back to Coleman for his easy going style, iconic blue shoes and comedic persona.  Story Hours were presented on June 13th & 20th.  Toddlers/Pre-K/Kindergarten, 1st & 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and Youth Book Club enjoyed stories, crafts, fun activities  and book discussions.

Guessing game was John Koch.  John guessed 501 nerd rock candies pieces and there was 567 pieces in the jar.  Congratulations John!  He won a $25 Apple card.
