Coleman Public Library joins the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP), a grassroots consortium of states working together to provide public libraries with high-quality summer reading program materials for children and teens.  The Coleman Public Library encourages children to keep reading during the summer months, to promote family literacy, to endorse the library as a fun place and to prevent the “summer slide” in learning.  Last year more than 2000 participants nationwide attended the Summer Reading Program and received reading certificates.

To kick off the event, Friends of the Library will have a special program on Registration Day, June 6th starting at 10:00 am. “Mr. Blue Shoes” will bring his guitar back to Coleman.  With his easy going style, backwards baseball cap, iconic blue shoes, and comedic persona, Mr. Blue Shoes is anything but a conventional Bluesman…  Mr. Blue shoes, Michael Dyson, Grammy Winning producer, youth entertainer, guitarist and performer has shared his unique version of the Blues Legend story with over 240,000 children.  His show is a 45 minute production with interactive activities for all ages.

Registration begins June 6th starting at 9:00 am and will continue throughout the day.  Last day to register will be June 13th.

June 13th and June 20st will be program days.  Starting at 9:30 in the morning 1st & 2nd grades will meet, and 3rd, 4th and 5th grades will meet at 10:30 am.  The (little folks) Toddler – Kindergarten will meet at 2:00 pm.  Committee chairman for these age groups are Dixie Bible, Sandra Rose and Sarah Beal and Vicki Calfa.

Bridget Wakefield will be in charge of the Youth Book Club.  They will meet on the 13th & 20th of June @ 11:00 am. She has selected the book “Alcatraz vs the Evil Librarians” by Brandon Sanderson.   Teens will have book discussions and enjoy other actives each week.

June 27th will be Awards Day at 10:00 am for all groups.  Those that turn in their reading sheets will receive their Reading Certificates and coupons from local businesses.  The top five readers will be announced and grand prizes will be drawn for Toddler-Pre-K-Kindergarten, 1st & 2nd Grades, 3rd, 4th & 5th grades and Youth Book Club groups.  Friends will provide refreshments of cake and punch.

Each child that registers June 6th will receive an event calendar and their reading requirement sheet.

Don’t miss out on a great time at the library.  For more information on the summer reading program, call the circulation desk during regular library hours 325-625-3043.

Reading expert Stephen Krashen says:

·         Children read more when they listen to and discuss books.

·         Reading skills grow by reading.

·          Reading helps improve children’s writing.

The Coleman Public Library has already began preparations for the 2018 Summer Reading Program, “Libraries Rock” theme.

The Summer Reading Program Committed is excited to announce one of our favorite performers “Mr. Blue Shoes” will be returning on Registration Day, June 6th, 10:00 am to kick off the fun activities!

More information about the program will be released in May.

It’s going to be a great summer so don’t miss out.
