Residential Solar/Wind Generation
Is a Solar or Wind System Right for You?
Clean, reliable, and inexpensive energy is something that everyone wants. For many, solar or wind generation can be the answer, but is it right for you? There are many things to think about when considering a solar/wind installation.
Things to Consider
- Will Solar eliminate my electrical bill? Probably not, but it may lower your bill.
- Will installing a solar or wind system require permits? YES!
- Will my roof support a solar installation? Maybe.
- Will I make money selling electricity back to the City? No.
Unless your solar installation includes batteries, there are still times that you will need to draw power from the grid. This means you will still need a utility account and you will generate a bill every month regardless of how much power you use. If your primary electrical use is during the day, then the electricity you draw from the grid may be reduced by a solar installation. Most people however still need lights and other appliances after the sun goes down, or on cloudy days when solar panels aren't generating power. That means you will continue to generate an electric bill in addition to any solar installation payments.
Solar/Wind installations require both electrical and structural permits and inspections for safety. Wind systems may also be limited by height.
The permitting process will help determine if your roof can support a new solar installation.
The City of Coleman does not currently purchase excess power generated by solar/wind systems.
