Salary Ranges Based on Experience:

  • Entry Level Officers: $21.55 – $26.91/hour
  • Experienced Patrol Officers: $22.63 – $28.26/hour
  • Senior Level Officers: $24.95 – $31.16/hour

General Description

Under the general direction of the Chief of Police, the patrol officer is responsible for responding to calls and assisting in conducting investigations to prevent crimes and/or solve criminal cases. Performs a variety of administrative functions, including public contact in person, in writing, and by telephone. Maintains an effective working relationship with representatives of public, other agencies, and City of Coleman Personnel. This position is required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergencies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Working in partnership with communities, liaising with community groups and individuals.
  • Providing a visible presence to deter crime and reassure the community.
  • Conducting patrol duties on foot and by car.
  • Developing community knowledge to identify individuals and locations at risk of being involved in crime.
  • Responding to calls and requests from the public to assist at incidents.
  • Keeping the peace at public meetings, social events, processions, trade disputes or strikes.
  • Diffusing potentially volatile situations with due regard for the safety of all involved.
  • Taking direction on specific duties from senior colleagues.
  • Investigating and attending road-related incidents including collision scenes, vehicle check points and traffic offences.
  • Enforcing road traffic laws and issuing citations and or warnings for relevant offences.
  • Dealing with lost or found property.
  • Enforcing City of Coleman Ordinances.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
  • Knowledge of Texas Penal Code; Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, Texas Health and Safety Code, Current Laws, Ordinances and Court Rulings, and of agency rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Texas Penal Code; Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, Texas Health and Safety Code, Current Laws, Ordinances and Court Rulings, and of agency rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of legal documentation procedures and requirements.
  • Skill in use and care of firearms, intermediate impact weapons including Oleoresin. Capsicum spray and other physical tactics.
  • Skill in completing accident and criminal investigations.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to provide legal depositions and testimony.
  • Ability to communicate and interact with officials at all levels of government.
Education and Experience:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience as a commissioned law enforcement officer.
  • College courses in law enforcement, criminal justice, or related fields preferred, but not required.

Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position may be considered.

Required Licenses/Certificates/Background:
  • Must possess a Peace Officer Certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Must submit and successfully pass a pre-employment physical examination and drug screen.
  • Must maintain certification status.
  • Requires a valid Texas drivers’ license.
  • Must successfully complete all requirements from Texas Commission on Law Enforcement for appointment by the Coleman Police Department.
Physical and Environmental Conditions:

Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions; Work may involve exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, etc.; Must be physically capable of performing the duties of a patrol officer.
